THE PROBLEM:

It doesn't happen often, sometimes not for entire sessions between boot-ups. But sometimes when I open "C:" or "Documents and Settings" the floppy drive light will come on and it makes a plbttt! noise. I regularly scan for malware and viruses with up-to-date AVG av., spy-bot, ad-aware and spywareblaster. It happens both on and offline.

What I want to know is, is this normal?
The only modification I have made to a system file was renaming explorer.exe to accommodate a change in text for my "Start" button on the task bar. Windows made another explorer.exe. This was some time ago and the floppy problem is recent.

Does it by any chance start happeing after you used a floppy? If so, try clearing your documents list in the start menu.

No. I have not had a floppy in the drive for a month or more. My MRU's are cleared on every boot-up. The problem hasn't occured for the last three boot-ups so maybe its "fixed".

Thanks for your replys...

The MRU is FIFO. You may have aged past the reference to the A: drive.

Ok...bcastner,
I know very little about stacks, pipes and the like so...
I assume FIFO, first in/ first out, refers to the order in which,in this case, MRU's are stacked. But I don't quite understand how it can or, has aged past the reference to A: drive. Does that mean the problem is gone or won't reappear for some time? Or, if I use the drive more frequently the problem will be less likely to occur? Maybe I need to do so research... Thanks for the tip

Apologies,

The FIFO reference was that there is limited space for the entries for most recently used documents. So the table for these entries is constantly refreshed as you use the machine, the first entry aging as newer entries are made.
At start lets say the stack has entries:

A
B
C

You open new documents or whatever, the stack moves:

B
C
D

C
D
E

.etc with the first entries "disappearing."
