The hard drive of my backup PC with Win98 died so I replaced the drive with Win XP. I discovered, however, that the floppy disk drive no longer seems to work. Whenever I put a disk in which has no problem on other computers I get a "Please insert formatted disk" modal window with one choice, "cancel". According to XP, the hardware is in order but I noticed that when I right-click "properties" under "My Computer", it lists the File System as "RAW". What is going on here, and how do I fix it?

Try formatting the disk.

it could very well be that the FLOPPY DRIVE has gone south-side on you... Replace it...

The floppy disk is fine; I had just copied a file to it from my other computer.

I'm not saying it isn't...but by formatting the floppy in the XP system, then you'll determine if it's the drive or something else.

Did you try to format a floppy in the drive with XP?

Dave has a point. You should try to put another one in and see if it works.

I haven't worked on it for awhile, but I am begining to suspect that might be what happened. I noticed when I booted with a floppy in the drive it makes a loud rattling noise and the floppy, which works fine on other PCs, doesn't invoice a prompt to format it, just a "Please insert formatted disk" modal window with one choice, "cancel".
