apart from "don't remove it" while using it,
could i use it for a swap file? is it not too slow, or would it be soon damaged? I don't know the latency/response times, etc, it would also interest me how it is built.

Not sure, but I don't believe you can create a page file on removable media.
Flash is slower than most HDD's.
Could damage the flash though - they have a finite no. of read/write cycles they can go through before failing.
Cost per GB is higher than a HDD.

thanks, my suspicions were confirmed...
but do you know where i can get some tech. data about them?

It's not easy to get the full specs of flash memory. Occasionally these are available on a manufacturers website. They seem to be especially shy when it comes to true performance and life times.

This article in wiki is pretty informative though.

Note thet value flash typically uses multi-level chips that have much shorter lives - only hundreds of writes, it's been claimed.
If possible, add more RAM. The results would be better.

thanks for your help, i did install more RAM and all is well, like in the fairy tales. Will study though the source you kindly ponted me to ...
