I made my first flash movie, it's not very long or anything, but the file size is huge! It's 7.56 mbs or something like that. Man I have seen some great flash movies with a lot more detail and are a lot longer then mine, at places like and the sizes are smaller then mine! I was just wondering HOW I could reduce the size... I know I should be able too.

I'll post my size report thing that came out with the publishing.

good god..there is no way he will get that file size down with all those bitmaps old..plus two sound tracks embeded in the file?.better rethink that design..

would suggest you look into loading those pics externaly and also the sound..

just a thought..

I didn't add in any bitmaps... I loaded in 4 animated gifs I made...

a animated gif is a series of bitmaps that when placed one behind the other following the correct sequence when played will produce a animation..when you imported the gif did you see how many frames it took to import that gif?.each frame is counted as a seperate bitmap in flash!! each one with it's own file size pertaining to that bmp..and not to mention the two mp3's you have embeded..you seriously have to sit down and re-think this design..it will not work like this..i am on a cable modem and would still have big problems waiting for this to download..not to mention 56k users they would never see it..

Hmm another question about this, is there a way to just make a certain frame pause for a while instead of having to put the same picture in like 50 frames just so the viewer can read text and what not. Another thing that would be nice is if you could just create one file to be the background, then you could just use the one file in every frame, because all my frames have the same background, but I drew differant things going on in each.. Ah that gives me another idea, sometimes I use the same object more then once in multiple pictures... if there was a way to just reuse them so I didn't have to create so many seperate files I bet that would reduce file size.

quickly because i am writing my essay for school but some help..

Hmm another question about this, is there a way to just make a certain frame pause for a while instead of having to put the same picture in like 50 frames just so the viewer can read text and what not. yes Another thing that would be nice is if you could just create one file to be the background, then you could just use the one file in every frame, because all my frames have the same background, but I drew differant things going on in each.. you can..very simply just put your background in the first frame..goto the 20th frame for instance and click insert keyframe..flash will automatically carry the background over through all the frames..the same one used and counted by flash only once.. Ah that gives me another idea, sometimes I use the same object more then once in multiple pictures... if there was a way to just reuse them so I didn't have to create so many seperate files I bet that would reduce file size. convert the object to a symbol and you can re-use it as many times as you want..flash only counts it once..

To optimize movies in general:

Use symbols, animated or otherwise, for every element that appears more than once.
Whenever possible, use tweened animations, which take up less file space than a series of keyframes.
For animation sequences, use movie clips instead of graphic symbols.
Limit the area of change in each keyframe; make the action take place in as small an area as possible.
Avoid animating bitmap elements; use bitmap images as background or static elements.
For sound, use MP3, the smallest sound format, whenever possible.

Your gifs are turned into individual bitmaps when importing them... And they become a series of keyframes rather than being a tweened animation.
And what about the size of these animated gifs?
IMHO, doesn't turn out to be such a big file!
Try converting your gifs into an .avi or a .mov! There's size!

You could try using an MP3 package to resize your Audio files too. You can probably chop 75% off the size of your MP3 files if you reduce the bit rate down; just fiddle with it until you can't hear it anymore!

The key thing to remember with any kind of web publishing is only make it 'just' good enough. i.e.: For graphics 300 dpi looks the same as 72 on screen, but takes loads more space. (I know that dpi doesn't apply to Flash, but you get the idea!).

Okay.. call my lazy, but could you point me to one of these MP3 editors that you are talking about... I don't like to leave my favorites:)

Um..... I'm not sure which ones are fantastic (everyone has their own favorites!) but Awave audio was quite nifty; its a shareware one, do a search on altavista or something for its home site....

yeh, all pc monitors can only display 72dpi so there is no point in putting any higher res pics on the site/movie! Also if you having to import picture and you find yourself makin them smaller dont strech them, take them back into a image editing suite and reduce the size there thus making the size of the picture smaller! If you find yourself enlarging images you want to do the opposite because otherwise the picture will pixalate, and i think every1 here will agree, rubbish pictures really really annoy me.

As a matter of intrest, have you published your site? if u have could you leave the url so i can actually see how complicated it is because there might be loads of ways of making the movie smaller, but no-one can tell untill you see what the movie contins!

first thing right off I notice your little java window advertisement
lose it for its taking up comunication time

another thing you could do is lose the insult line and ad a simple vector preloader movie to at least entertain for the blank black screen

dude this post has been dead for a while let's leave it dead!!!
