When I import either a PNG, JPEG or GIF, Flash *distorts* the image and text regardless of image size (meaning I import the image at it's original size without expanding or shrinking).

It's even *more* noticable when you Test Movie and/or create an EXE.

Question: anyone know why? or better yet know of a solution or suggestion.

TIA (thanks in advance) for your time.

you can try to sharpen an image up

Open library - right click image - properties , if GIF set it to GIF/PNG lossless , turn off the smoothing and if JPG , set it JPG compression to 100 and turn the smoothing
off .

Bill: thanks very much for responding. I will check this out on Monday and reply back with the results.

Hi:

Thanks for the tip(s), something I didn't think or know about however.. it really didn't work. It actually came out more jaggy for all 3 formats. What is interesting is that when viewed as an HTML it remains sharp. It's almost as if Flash 5 is compressing a 2nd time in SWF (and EXE) and therefore deteriates the images. When viewed in *Fireworks* it looks really good and crisp. I've looked at the Flash 5 Publish settings hoping to tell Flash not to compress images but there is no such option.

TIA (thanks in advance) for any suggestions.

well, i guess when you say "looking at it in html" you mean the website generated when you published the movie.

what you might not know is that in the html-site you see the same flash-film as when clicking the swf itself.

the film is embedded in the site.

i'd say your problem neither belongs to the images nor to the flashfilm itself.

it is dependent on whether you rescale the film or not.

the point is that vector graphics (such as images made in flash) can easily be resized because they are determined mathematically. pixel-graphics like jpg,gif,png (imported to flash) can not be resized that easily;
so if you resize the film to say 150% the pixels won't become more,

flash can only try to show them as if they where more.

that is what probably causes the crooked way your images look like.

I'd just make sure you use the images at their original size (just as you said you would) and that the film won't get resized, then everything should be fine. regards

Thanks Firegambler for reponding.

Actually I was using Flash's preview in browser feature. It looks ok when I use that but not during the SWF or when I created a project EXE.

The image(s) are static with no animation done to them and in their original size with no scaling at all. I've tried the following formats: PNG, JPEG, GIF and BMP of the same image(s). The text in particular is absolutly terrible and pretty much unreadable (yet when viewed in HTML and/or in Fireworks, they look ok). I'm repeating myself but it's the SWF and EXE that distorts (or to put it bluntly -- looks crappy). My problem is I can't use the HTML (it was just previewed for comparision).

Much appreciated for the feedback.

it is not necessarily the images that cause their crappy look, might be that when opening the projector or swf file the flashplayer gets resized a bit which will make the images crappy no matter whether they are used in unscaled size in the film.
have you thought about preventing the flashplayer from getting resized or fullscreen mode?

i hope that works, otherwise i wouldn't know why the images should look bad. regards

Thanks again Firegambler for responding.

*have you thought about preventing the flashplayer from getting resized or fullscreen mode?*

That sounds like an idea I'd like to try. Could you provide a hint please. Is that part of the FS actionscript code? At the monment my right brain is not speaking to my left brain.

TIA (thanks in advance) for your time.

billwatson & Firegambler:

that's the solution. Flash Player (EXE) View was NOT at "100%" but rather "Show All" which condensed the images slightly but enough to distort them.

I added fscommand("allowscale","false"); to frame 1 and it displays properly.

What a relief - it proves 2-3 heads are so much better than 1.

Many many thanks to both of you for sticking around and coming up with suggestions to try.

that's what we all are here for, glad we could help you!! :) regards

Hi soolan,
I'm brand new here and not the brightest jewel in the crown, but here goes, anyway, lol!
I have been up ages trying to get anything, text, images, anything, with a trial version of flashplayer7 and, if I'm being honest, I, initially want to use it to play a game that my son has installed. Obviously, I want to be able to try other uses of the program, too, if I ever see it working!
I have tried doing what their own site's FAQ suggest (lol) and, as far as I can tell, my pc meets the requirements. I have the thing insalled ok but just cannot get a thing except a greyish screen.
So I just wondered if you could provide one or more pointers as to what my next move might be.
TIA (LOL) B00Mer ;)
