I'm running a DS4300 with Flash copy to a P-570 with 6 LPARs and I'm thinking through the backup/restore scenario. My thoughts are to bring down the app and oracle, flash the drive, then bring everything back up. Then mount the VG of the flashed drive to a backup LPAR and move it to tape for each LPAR. To restore I would either DLPAR the Tape drive to the restoring LPAR for a full data restore, or just mount the flash copy to the backup LPAR and ftp over for smaller files via the hypervisor.

This scenario will reduce our down time to 5 mins max compared to a couple of hours, reduce tape resources, allow a copy to be available if needed, it sounds really good. Anybody doing this or see any problems/ gotchas in this approach?

Thanks.....

Your post is interesting grepper :)

for my case, i use NIM master LPAR for system backups and remote (ssh) for data backup (on one of the LPARs owning the tape drive)

Where can i find more information about the FLASH you are talking about?

Regards
Khalid

Khalid,

You could do the same sort of thing with snapback, see man page.

euhm, bring down oracle for backup???? how about online backup ? -> alter database begin backup -> do a flash copy -> alter database end backup.Result : no downtime

RGM, thanks for the tip, I'll run it by our DBAs. I believe for some reason we still have to do cold backups.
