I have a Linksys BEFVP41 at one location, which is connected to a broadband connection. At another location I have a Linksys BEFW11S4 router. I want to be able to use the VPN software that is in Windows 98SE to VPN to the other location. How do I do this?

Hi. I recently did this so I am going to post the instruction I wrote here. Hope it will help you.

Step 1: Installing VPN adapter

1. Click START, click SETTINGS, click CONTROL PANEL, and then double-click ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS
2. Click the WINDOWS SETUP tab
3. Click COMMUNICATIONS, click DETAILS, click to select the VIRTUAL PRIVATE NETWORKING check box, and then click OK
4. Click OK, and then click YES to restart your computer

Step 2: Creating the VPN Connection

1. Double click MY COMPUTER, and then double click DIAL-UP NETWORKING
2. Double click MAKE NEW CONNECTION
3. In the TYPE A NAME FOR THE COMPUTER YOUR ARE DIALING box, type a name for this connection
4. In the SELECT A DEVICE box, choose MICROSOFT VPN ADAPTER, and then click NEXT
5. In the HOST NAME OR IP ADDRESS box, type the ip address of the remote machine you are connecting to
6. Click NEXT, and then click FINISH

The last step is to go configure the VPN connection properties.

What do you mean "the last setup is to go configure the VPN connection properties."?

It means you have to go configure the VPN connection. If you right click the connection you make, you have to configure how it can obtain an ip address, dns server info, etc... Here is an example:

1. Double-click MY COMPUTER
2. Double-click DIAL UP NETWORK
3. Right click the VPN connect you just created and select PROPERTIES
4. Click the SERVER TYPE tab
¡P Under ADVANCE OPTIONS, check the following
1. log on to network
2. enable software compression
3. required data encryption
¡P Under ALLOW NETWORK PROTOCOLS, click TCP/IP SETTINGS
1. select SERVER ASSIGN IP ADDRESS
2. select SPECIFY NAME SERVER ADDRESS
¡P enter the following
PRIMARY DNS: (your dns server ip)
SECONDARY DNS: (you dns server ip)
3. check USE IP HEADER COMPRESSION
¡P Click OK
5. Click OK

So after you have this configured, you are ready to go make the VPN connection.

So this will work if I use a peer-to-peer connection? (one Windows 98SE computer to a router with VPN software then multiple computers connected to that router with a network cable) I have heard that it will work with a Windows 98SE computer on one side and a server running Windows 2000 on the other side.
