First Time Defrag! 2

Hi

Recently cleared out 1Gb of email from a postmater account (Exchange 2003 SP1). The current database sizes are priv1.edb = 7.8Gb and priv1.stm = 6.7. Event ID 1221 tells me that mailbox store has 851 megabytes of free space.
Just a few quick questions -

1. Is it just a case of dismounting the store and backing up the database files before performing Eseutil /d priv1.edb ?

2. Roughly how long would the defrag take on a database this size?

3. Does SP2 allow you to modify the 16Gb limiy for public folders and mailboxes?

1. Yes. But bear in mind that leaving that whitespace there is actually a good thing. That's because Exchange will reuse that space as the store grows. Not only that, but it's actually easier for Exchange to use existing whitespacec than to increase the size. If drive space isn't an immediate concern, leave it be.

2. That depends on drive speed, system resources, etc.

Great response - much appreciated - think I will leave it for the time bieng.

Quick question though - I would expect that Event ID 1221 would have reported more free space after recently delting over 1Gb from a postmaster mailbox account (after a nightly online defrag) - this figure hasnt changed for the last few nights. Does this figure then reflect the current whitespace avaialable?

You'll have a deleted item retention time to consider first. So postmaster deletes 1GB but DIRT is 7 days so you can undelete for that period.

That's why the 1221 is still low.

DIRT = Deleted Item Retention Time.
This is a setting where the Exchange system will not permanently delete mail for the period set. This allows mail to be "undeleted" directly from outlook and can save lengthy restores etc.
A very handy feature....especially where users think "Deleted Items" is some sort of folder for storing mail they want to keep!
