First SMS 2003 setup

Hi,

This is probably an easy question but its the first time i have ever set up an SMS sytem so here it is

WE have around 700 users, 300 + computers, and a 2003 AD network with one subnet & domain. I would like to setup a 'standard' system, that allows machines to have software pushed out to them based on machines and users, and OU's etc.

when i first install SMS do i have to use Network Discovery first? is this enough?
or do i need to use the AD groups & the AD system & AD users dicovery.

If the latter, then can they all be used in conjunction with each other and what is the traffic implications. also is Network Discovery still reqd.

Any help for this newbie would be much appreciated

Ive just had a look, at our live network, and the installation on that (which was done by an external party) also shows only one PC in the collections tab (i.e the site server). Why is this when it has been set to network discovery accross the whole domain. a DHCP server has also been set within the settings if that has something to do with it..

ahhhhhh ;saldkg;ldfsjgdfsjg this is frustrating, ive spent the whole day on this! L.O.L. Thank god its a Friday

O.K ive kind of got my head around things a bit now. However i cant seem to find the answer to one thing.

Network dsicovery i have boundaries defined as my AD, all clients are members of the domain. However the only way to get them to recognise the new machines is by having the subnet and the DHCP configured together. Does anyone know why Subnet on its own does not work, or why DHCP on its own does not work.

Network discovery kinda bites, Since your in AD turn on ad discovery and you won't have as many problems.

You do not need Network Discovery. All you need is AD Discovery. Just Make sure that you extend the AD Schema and that you configure the Discovery schedule and System Maintenance so the system runs as it should.
