I will be having some fun deploying an Exchange 2003 Enterprise server on Windows 2003 member server in what i believe to be a child windows 2000 domain (this i will confirm from the first site visit tomorrow). It will be the first deployment of Exchange 2003 within this otherwise Groupwise environment / organisation.

I am looking to confirm a couple of things and also interested in feedback on anything that you may like to offer.

1.Forestprep replication. Will deploying forestprep in this child domain cause AD schema replication throughout the entire forest?

2. Exchange 2003 Exterprise. Can Enterprise be installed be installed on a Windows 2003 Standard server?

3. Groupwise. If the mail data routed is purely SMTP, will there need to be a connector to the groupwise (internet agent) infrastructure?

Thanks for help in advanced.

1. Forest Prep changes the Forest Schema and must be run in the root domain. You Need to run forestprep then Domain prep in the child domain.
2. Yes
3. Dunno.

Good Luck,
iain

If you're looking to get off of GroupWise, you can run the Migration Wizard to move mail to Exchange.

Thanks guys for the quick responses,

I have a couple of concerns in the way Exchange will work across a separate Forest scenario outlined below and I am interested in further feedback.

I have since found out that this site is its own separate forest (single forest, single domain) with no trusts to other forests (3 forests in total) of the same organisation. We will be using a tool called WINGRA for the migration from GroupWise to Exchange. I think it will be an interesting tool to use. They a predominantly a Novell shop from the Admin side of things, will XML replication to their Win2k. That is the reason (at present) for no forest trusts. They will be staying with Novell network management I believe. It is working great and their skill base is Novell. I think they will start to rely a bit more on the Windows side of things though.

In mentioning this branch of this large organisation (4000+ recipients and distribution lists in all forests, approx 300 in the forest I will be looking after) being in its own separate forest, they are planning a company wide migration from GroupWise to Exchange.

GroupWise currently has a single central management point. This site (GroupWise Internet Agent) determines which site to send the mail of any particular recipient based on the site that recipient is a member of. Mail has a single point of entry throughout the whole company; this site receives its mail from this single entry point. (Logically this is correct, there is fault tolerance built in and it is a bit more complicated in reality)

1. I am a bit concerned with no forest trusts, how Exchange will determine this operation in forwarding mail to the appropriate site of the recipient? I will be looking at their larger migration strategy from the bigger picture perspective.

2 There is another issue related to this of internal communication of e-mail, say from a forestA recipient where I am, to forestB or forestC recipients via the GAL / GALs. What are some ways to tackle this?

Thanks in advanced
