I was upgrading firmware on a IBM machine that is running on AIX 5.3-04. As during that firmware process, system automatically reboot but our system is at a stage where it is not rebooting. Right now system is up and running and its uptime (which is 3 days) shows it did not shutdown during this firmware upgrading process. Now I can see shutdown process still running on server.

root 44058 1 0 16:48:05 - 0:00 /usr/bin/ksh /usr/sbin/shutdown -F -u/var/update_flash_image

I think my mistake is that installed firmware on AIX 5.3 because it is written in Cautions and Important Notes that

ATTENTION: The firmware levels contained in this package MUST be installed before installing AIX 5.3.

Any solution to get out of this problem?

Thanks

What is the hardware model you were upgrading the firmware on?

I'd look for a child process of the shutdown process.

ps -ef|grep 44058

I'm thinking along the lines of a local shutdown script modification that is now trying to run a site-specific shutdown script, and is asking for a user verification.

If you terminate that child process (perhaps after manual shutdown of whatever application it is supposed to shut down), your shutdown/update_flash will go ahead. But your server will shutdown at that point. Better make sure you (or your users) are OK with that.
