Im new to WiFi, Do I need a firewall (ZoneAlarm) on the nes wireless laptop?

Im using a D-link 624, filtering IPs

Thanks in advance

Ken

If you're making a connection to the Internet, then you should always have a firewall in place, whether you're cabled direct or using wireless.

If it's a new laptop, then you'll possibly be running Windows XP as the operating system. Xp has its own built-in firewall, which can be switched on or off. But you can use Zone Alarm as well, and this will allow checking and blocking on OUTGOING as well as INCOMING data. XP's firewall only checks and blocks incoming packets.

Hey,

You don't Need a firewall, most routers, if set up properly can do all this for you.

But, If you have a good one, eg ZoneAlarm definitely use it over the M$ XP Firewall.

Hi,

Be carefull when trying install your wireless network while having a firewall installed may it be soft/hardware based as it can have issues when trying to connect to devices.

Best bet is to turn your disconnect from the wide world then turn your firewall off. Configure you wireless systems so they are up and running. once tested and happy then reconnect your firewall.

Do not go to the outside world without one.
