Heya All,

I'm just a home user (i.e. novice) and just updated my Win2003 server to SP 1. This of course install the Firewall and now none of my computers can access any of the servers shared drives. The pcs trigin to access are all XP SP2.

There is no problem if I trun off the firewall ut once I trun it on.. and then try to access a drive I'll get and unable to connect error saying...

"Msft Windows Network: Local Device Name Already In Use"

Also, when I log in , from entering pw and hitting enter, it will take over 2 mintues to finally getting in.

Under the firewall exceptsion I do have the Hile and Printer sharing checked but nothing else.

Any help would be greatly appreciated (also please remember I'm not network savy, just a coder ;-) )

If your logging in from the xp machines and its taking 2 minutes, check the DNS settings on those machines and make sure they are set to the server IP address.

That may be your problem all together.

Heya justin,
Thanks for the reply.

I currently have the workstation setup to "obtain" automatically for both the IP and DNS Server.

While the server's IP is hard-coded with the Primary DNS set to 127.0.0.1 and the secondary to the IP of my internet service provider.

Should i have things set up differntly?

Thanks again

If you have the workstations set up to "obtain" the ip address automatically, then you have it set to use DHCP. You have to set up your server as a DHCP server also. Then the server will assign ip's to the workstations.

Your configuration is wrong. First, make sure you have dns setup on your server. This is a must. Set the DNS server address to itself. Don't set it to the loop back address. Second, remove the ISP address. Instead, once your have DNS configured properly, create a forward to your ISP DNS.

Next, properly setup DHCP if you are going to assign IP address automatically. You will want to setup DHCP to configure the address for DNS and the gateway. Again, the workstations should have the DNS address of the server, not your ISP. When the server gets a request for an address on the internet, it will see that it is not it it's registry and forward it to the ISP DNS server.

Hope this post helps

Thanks Justin and itaviator.

Justin, your post is helpful, hope you don't mind some followup questions.

>> First, make sure you have dns setup on your server.

Using the DNS Console I can see my server listed. I didn't do anything specific when installing Win2003 so don't know if I need to do anything else

>> Set the DNS server address to itself. Don't set it to the loop back address.

I assume you mean in the Local Connection Properties dialog - Use the following DNS Server Address. If so I have done that.

As an aside I have set a static IP Address for the Server, can I assume that is needed. (i.e. I don't want the server IP address "obtained")

>> create a forward to your ISP DNS.

Using the Wizard , I selected...

"Create forward lookup Zone"

.. in the next step its asks....

"Which DNS Server maintains you primary forward lookup zone"

- This server
- An ISP

Which should I choose?

I should add that I do not have a STATIS IP Address with my ISP, its just a basic Home DSL connection. Does that make a difference. If I have to occasionally change the setting on the server when my ISP changes the IP I don't mind.

>> Next, properly setup DHCP if you are going to assign IP address automatically.

I'll wait until I have the rest setup before I do this (baby steps) :)

Thanks Again!
