I've been browsing a few newsgroups over the last week to determine what the best ADSL modem/router I should buy to connect to my Firebox x700.

This is our backup firewall as our main service are running via a leased line service on an another Firebox x700.

The backup FIrebox x700 will be actively used for low rate HTML Browsing and provide a secondary inbound route for email, because of this we have decided to install an ADSL Service.

The new adsl service has 5 useable static IP addresses which I need to passthrough to the firebox as it will handle the 1 to 1 NAT to internal network.

There are a number of devices in the market, from Modems to full blown Adsl routers with Firewalls.

I need a cheap and simple device as the Firebox will handle all the firewall duties.

If anyone is or has used a device which they would recommend so I can investigate before buying, please drop me a post with make and model.

As an aside, has anyone managed to do port based routing on the firebox ?

Many thanks

Iain

Resolution to the problem :

BT Supplied a BT2700HG Home Office Wireless Gateway. To configure this to work with the Firebox X700 (or other similar model) you need to configure the ADSL Router to become a Bridge.

Note the DSL router will loose all NAT/DHCP/PPPoE functionality and you will obtain the full 8 IP addresses allocated by BT and not the 5 if the DSL router was acting as a permiter router.

This also means that all IP addresses which are registered as Public will be handled by the Firebox.

To configure the DSL router you need to connect to the device and open the management menu (not provided by BT).

>> homeportal/management

Within here Click Configure under the broadband services and

1.Disable ATM PVC Search.
2.Set VPI = 0 and VCI = 38
3.Changed connection type to Direct IP
4.Cleared the static IP, but leave enabled
5.Set the ATM encapsulation to bridged LLC
6.Select Configure Services under Advanced and UnCheck Enable Routing, note that from the point that you submit the changes the DSL router will return to a modem and the default IP address will change to 192.168.1.254

Now to configure the Firebox :

1. Open Network Configuration
2. Select Interfaces
3. Set External Interface to PPPoE
4. Select "Use the following IP Address"
5. Use the Router/Gateway address allocated by BT
6. Enter your username - xxx@hgxx.btclick.com
7. Enter your password

Save configuration and re-boot.

The Firewall will now have the external IP as the Router/Gateway and all the remaining IP addresses allocated to you including the ones BT said were reserved will be sent to your firebox.
