We have to have 2 lines, 1 for primary and 1 for secondary for the fire alarm system. Can the secondary line have DSL on it?

alarm companies do not like alarm lines on any line that passes data, but i have used dsl lines as long as it is filtered correctly

WORK SMART NOT HARD

The alarm companies may not like it, but they can't prevent you from using it with DSL or other secondary purpose! In the case of DSL, I would put in a DSL line splitter that has the two outputs, one for the DSL on its own pair, and the phone line on its own pair that would go the the RJ31X jack for the alarm system. Wired in that fashion there should not be any problem for the alarm co. Remember the customer is paying for the line, not the alarm co.

If alarm cos would learn proper installation practices, we would all have less problems and headaches! And they should leave telephony to the pros!

Using SYSQUEST's suggestion above will also prevent any chance of your DSL connection being interrupted when your alarm system does any self tests that grab the line, or if you guys do any scheduled tests that send out alarms for testing purposes.

In an RJ31X environment whenever the alarm system "siezes" the phone line it disconnects anything that is connected downstream from the jack.

Ditto everyone else - and watch what those alarm guys do after the DSL is installed. More than once, I've seen them ignore the 31X and just "beanie" in to the telco can. When asked, they replied "Oh, that's so the alarm cannot be unplugged from the line." They got mad when I put the 31X plug on their cable, but the customer was happy that his DSL wasn't dropping out any more, and told the alarm guys to "Leave it alone. It works just fine.

Unless of course their support contract says you can't use it for anyhting else. If it does, then it has a problem, even in Line 1, they may well turn round and say, well we won't support it until you rectify the connection.

Check your contract!

DSL does not affect the operation of the line, so that is immaterial contract or not! If the RJ31X or RJ38X is installed properly there should not be any issues.

"... there should not be any issues."

Except Finger Pointing! LOL.
