Guys,

I am not a network guru.
How to find out which port my desktop connected to
on Catalyst 2900 without physically going to the switch?

Solution

1)telnet to the switch from another machine
2)Go into enable mode
3)type term mon
4)unplug your network cable from your PC and the switch will tell you which port went from a state of up to down

It is what it is!!

Solution 2
1) Find the MAC address of your NIC card
2) Telnet into the switch
3) Go to enable mode
4) do a show mac add (or something close to that depending on your switch type. 5000 series uses the show CAM command).
5) Look for your MAC address and it will tell you which port it is on.
6) Label the port so tha next time you will know.

It is what it is!!

computerhighguy,

Thank you.
But when I do telnet switch IP,
I get "Password required, but none set.Connection to host lost"

What if I just disable my network card
and see which port changed the status color
from green to grey at Web Management?

if you have physical access to the switch login via the console port and set a password on line vty 0 4 (telnet)

Hi mtelleka,

Sorry I don't understand what you mean by

"login via console port and set a password on line vty 0 4"?

Do you mean I have to physically connect some computer to the switch and run the commands?

If you cannot telnet to the switch, then you cannot meet your requirements of not going to the switch.

It is what it is!!

OK, If I physically go to the switch
what does it change? How do I communicate
with the switch? How do I run your commands?
