I built a template in Excel fr doing work on various data sets. What I do is copy the file, naming it something that lets me know which data it contains, and then copy the data itself into one of the worksheets that is set up for that purpose.
When I open the copy, it informs me that there are links to other data sources and wants to know if I want them updated.
When I go to the "Data"/"Edit Links", it shows that the source being referenced is none other than the template file that I made the copy from. This of course causes trouble when I try to send the data-specific file to someone else.
I could just reassign them to stay local, but I want to figure out why it's happening. I've searched the workbook cell by cell and am not finding any formulas that point outside. Is there a feature that allows you to locate where links exist?
And why would it do this? There are all kinds of formulas in there and none that I saw had the links in them, so it's clearly not doing it for all of them.
Does anyone know what's going on here?
Thanks.

I've had this happen when I have a macro assigned to a run when you click a shape (e.g., circle, rounded rectangle). When I saved the spreadsheet under a new name (e.g., Something v2) it still associates the macro with the old spreadsheet. In order to stop the link, I would have to reassign the macro associated with the shape to the macro on the new spreadsheet.

That was it. I have 5 command buttons with macros assigned to them and 4 of them were pointing to macros in the original document. So, why did one of them escape this fate? I think it might be because the four offending macros were originally assigned while other workbooks were open and so it took the whole path during the assignment. I tried reassigning the macros in the original document while it was the only sheet open, then made a copy and this time the links were internal.
Thanks for your insight.
