I have a Windows 2000 Server up and running as my domain controller. I have a Windows 2000 professional client logging on successfully to the domain. I am trying to add a global group to the client's local administrator account so that the user will have administrative controll over their own machine.
I am able to browse through the groups on the domain and I select the correct one to add. When I click "OK" It gives me an error box saying "The specified doamin either does not exist or could not be contacted." How can this be true if I can see the domain controller and I can even logon to the domain? Any Ideas?

Sorry but I don't have the answer to this, but you're not alone. I am trying to add a dc to my domain but keep getting tha same error as you. I can ping and even browse to the root dc, but not add a server to the domain.
???

Try adding the group from either the server, or another PC and right click my computer select manage, right click computer management and connect to the other computer, add the new group in groups or the user in the local admin group.

micon55, did you run dcpromo to join the new domain? I had problems with the same thing, and it took several tries, and even when I did, it wasn't right. I had to do dcpromo and demote it, then dcpromo and promote it. Then it worked. Go to and do a search for the problem also.
Another thing you might want to check is hardware. I had a nic on a server sending out bad packets, and my users kept getting the error message, "Incorrect password". I was totally confused since they had been on before, and I would re-set the password and they still had the same problem. Used my performance monitor for checking on something else, and just happened to check the nic, and found the bad broadcasts. Different nic, no more user problems. Glen A. Johnson

It didn't work. Im exausting all of my ideas.
Do I need to implement WINS?

Help

I ALWAYS use wins, even if your not having problems. Your network might be running smooth, but if you do get a hardware issue and the traffic gets confusing, wins helps. Also, take advantage of the hosts and lmhosts files for the same reason. Good luck. Glen A. Johnson

dcpromo os used for domain controllers, I am tring to add the workstations to the domain. The workstation is added to the domain successfully but when I try and add a global group to the local administrator group it says it cannot find the domain. Cant think of what it is????
