On my Thinkpad the Fn F5 combination opens wireless location profiles and when I click on Find Wireless Networks the window closes and the network in this location is not found (although there is no indication of any attempt to find it).

Open Access Connections also closes the window without opening anything.

Clicking on the System Tray Icon opens Wireless Connection Status where I see "Radio On, not associated".

Is it as simple as creating a new wireless location profile and if so, how does one go about it? (never used the IBM app previously)

The network is available and can be seen on another (Dell) notebook using Windows to configure the wireless (sorry for the 4 letter word).

The X40 is not my machine so I am hesitant to uninstall the IBM Wireless Application. If I do uninstall and reinstall the app will I loose all of the previous wireless networks that it has stored?

Any help is greatfully appreciated.

XP's built-in wifi app is really good, in many cases better than the utility that ships with the wifi card. I was stubborn and fought it for a long time but now it's my default choice if available.

For testing, I would first make sure that System Restore is enabled, then set a System Restore point, then uninstall the utility (not the card driver). See if Windows can connect. If so, and the card is good, try to reinstall the utility. Most apps keep a folder with settings intact for just this scenario. If it fails you should be able to restore to the Restore Point.

It may also be that there are specialized TCP/IP properties set up on the current card, like on my SBS network. All the wireless cards' DNS setting points to the IP address of the server NIC, not "Obtain DNS Server automatically".

With the Windows utility there is a wizard. For others, I would go to Start/Programs/XYZ wireless utility and sniff around. It could not hurt to visit IBM/Lenovo's website for assistance.

finally took your advice and dumped the ibm agent.

i have an hp coming in this afternoon with a similar problem. when the screen saver kicks in and you log back in, the wireless connection is gone. restarting is the only way to get it back. disabling the log in is not an option as there are 4 users on the machine. i have had the windows utility working just fine on it but the hp program takes over when retarted. i have a feeling that the hp agent isn't long for this world either.

thanks

Exactly what happened on my Win2K Dell w/D-Link card. It must be another MS conspiracy [smile]
