find space function 1

Hello group.
Does any one know how to create a function that will give me the location of the first space in a column of text.
I need to delete the first group in the text field and the space that separtate the first field and the second field, is between the 21st and 25th character. I can't use the substring function with a set number. I'm using Cognos 6.1.14. Thank you.

If you're using Impromptu, do you not have a "locate" function?
Otherwise, there is the first word function which could be combined with length (od_ or octet_) to give you the start position for a substring function.

I actually created two functions that worked. The locate function with the substring function and the position function with the substring function.
