I am twisting my brain thinking WHY and HOW did we get into Romans and Greeks? Are those 2 languages ever considered as a base of anything that one will rush and look up in those two? Could Filthy Rich be an American native frase? Puzzled me:-D

I saw a PBS show on Judism once and it told about, in ancient times, rich people had others to handle their money. This was due to 1) if there was a discrepency, he had someone to blame and 2) "dealing in monetary matters" was consided dirty. You were not truly rich if you had to handle your own money.
The jews were already considered dirty, so the matter was often left to them and so they became quite adept at it.

RMP (read MY posts) - it is all home-made saying about rich by envious poor. I am thinking now how is 'stinking' fit into Greek/Roman mythology and THIS is funny?
