3 questions:
1. allowing filesharing
2. what protocol to use
3. can I delete some of them or what do I need (protocols/clients/services)

1. I'm setting up a small network, and try to turn on filesharing. On one of the computers all the checkboxes are dimmed though (when I go Desktop | any folder | Properties | Sharing) I have run the network wizard, and I have tried to use the network disk, that I made when I setup the network on the first computer.

What can I do??

2. I dont like wizards, but someone convinced me that it was easy to use, so I tried. But I have discovered, that after running the network wizard, when I go to the Control Panel | Network connections | Local Area Connection (Properties) ... then its NOT using NWlink protocol - thats what all the guides tells me to use though, when I set up a small network.

3. So, should I use the wizard and let windows do what it want to do, or should I add the NWlink protocol? And in case of the last option, can you tell me something like this: delete all protocols, then add X, Z, and Z... because it all looks a bit messy now, I got almost all protocols, services, and clients added and I got no idea what it means!?

Thanks alot, I have spend 2 weeks on and off trying to get the last computer on filesharing. Any ideas will help.

Few Questions

1- Do you have a router
2- Are both machines the same OS

One thing you need to do if you are using XP is disable "SIMPLE FILE SHARING"

To do that go to My Computer -> Tools -> Folder Options, then go to the View Tab and scroll down the list and UNCHECK "Use Simple File Sharing"

Once that is done you should be able to get the Sharing Tab Now.

Thanks for you fast reply!

1. NAT router yup, its build into the modem, besides this I got a switch and a router (where I have switched off the NAT funtion, so its actually just a switch).

2. More or less, They are all XPs, this one with the problem wasn't bought this time, so I guess its setup different. I didn't set it up.

---------

I got simple file sharing on the other computers, and I just tried turning it off on the computer with problems, now I can do it, but the folder just aren't accessable from the other computers...

So new problem: I can share the folder, but cant access them on the network.

Make sure that all the computer are either in the same DOMAIN, or WORKGROUP. If not they will not see each other

They are "WORKGROUP" and I can see all the computers, but only get into some of them, and see the shared files and folder. When I click on other computers on the list I get a message saying:
"\\computername is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Access denied".

And I have step by step compared the settings on a computer that work and one that doesn't without finding any difference. The setting I have compared was the one in the My Computer, Properties, Computer Name ... and Control Panel, Network Connections, Properties.

I have also tried the "ipconfig -all" thingy, to change the NodeType to hybrid, didn't work.

Turning off the windows firewall.
Turning off the antivirus.

I dont know what more to do.

Any ideas would help! :)

What you can try is going onto the machines where the shares are local and determine under the sharing tab -> advanced that everyone has full control, as well under security Tab make sure that everyone has full control.

Thanks, I tried that too...

First I had to untick "Use simple file sharing", then I gave full control to all, but it still didn't work.

Thanks anyway :)

Thanks!!!

The link told me that I should change:

This is in some cases caused by a registry setting named RestrictAnonymous. Go to the computer which you cannot access, start a registry editor and change the following registry value.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
\SYSTEM
\CurrentControlSet
\Control
\Lsa
Value name: RestrictAnonymous
Value type: DWORD
If the value is 1 or even 2, change it to 0, reboot and retest. If the problem is solved, leave the value at zero.

That made it all work, and I checked the other computers that worked, and they had that setting too. Dont know what made it change, but it works now!

I dont know what RestrictAnonymous do, is it an unsecure thing to do, to set it to zero? or is it ok??

Thanks!!! :)

You aren't running a software firewall on these machines, are you? Including the XP one?
