I am trying to instal fax services on my XP SP3 RC.

If I try to instal from Control Panel it tells me to tick what I want to instal.

I tick just fax services and it uninstals everything listed ticked or not. Trying to reinstal the various items encounters a problem as it says it cannot copy a particular file. It correctly lists it location and I can see the file is there on explorer in service pack updates. I can also find the same file in system32 but it will not copy that either. If I cancel that file it says it cant copy another and so on until it says it cant copy any files and setup is closed the only way I can get the uninstalled programs back is by a full system restore using Norton Go Back

Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Thanks

Ray

SP3 RC - did you have this problem before installing this?

To be honest, I dont know as I had never needed the fax before.

However I have notices when searching the forum that similar problems had occured to other people installing other services but their solutions do not apply

If you have gone back to before SP3 was installed, assuming that lands you at SP2, can you then install the Fax from SP2?

XP SP3 is not too far away it might be better to wait for the final version of that as it will come with the usual free Microsoft support.

Thanks for your thoughts. I have tried to uninstall SP3 but the instructions from Microsoft says to remove it from add/remove programs and it is not listed as a program or an update

Removing the Beta SP3 might not be a good move based on my experience, but then again I assume it (mine) was trying to return to an earlier Beta I had installed and not SP2. In any case the uninstalled failed miserably leaving me with a machine that would not load the Desktop. In the end I had to use one of my image backups to recover.

In fairness to Microsoft I was presented with many warnings that drivers and software would cease to function if I uninstalled Beta SP3, which I chose to ignore to my folly.

Have you ticked the box in Add or Remove to show Updates?

I note this from SP1...

"NOTE: If you choose not to archive files when you install Windows XP SP1, Windows XP SP1 is not listed in Add or Remove Programs and therefore you cannot remove it. Also, if you install updates to Microsoft Internet Explorer after you install Windows XP SP1, Windows XP SP1 may not be listed in Add or Remove Programs. In this case, you can remove the updated version of Internet Explorer to restore Windows XP SP1 to Add or Remove Programs".

You Cannot Use the "Start Windows Using Last Known Good Configuration" Feature to Remove SP1

This is an example and guide of what else you can do if you wish to remove SP3

I guess I'll just have to leave it as it is and use a third party fax program. thanks for your help
