Files that increase in size even when you don't save them.

I created a template for the set of brochures that I'm doing on PageMaker 7.0.

Everytime I use the template for a brochure, I'll save it in another file (not as the template), but as time goes by, I find that my template file naturally increases in size too.

Is there anyway to solve this problem? Because my file can start off as being a small file (less than 1mb) and balloon to 50mb.

According to another FAQ column that I read, I should save it as a smaller file, as compared to a faster one, and that I have done. I don't save the template file, but it still increases.

Is anyone able to offer some advice?

I believe PM adds editing data to a document each time it is open. You can strip your document to its base file size by performing a 'save as' to a new file, instead of just saving over the original document.

I'm not sure if perhaps my question was misunderstood, because that's what I've been doing and yet, the files are still increasing in size, so I've an example here:

I open template.pmd and then transfer line drawings and text from brochure1.pmd to template.pmd and proceed to save it as brochure1301.pmd.

Then I close both files and I re-open template.pmd. I didn't save template.pmd at all.

Are there any mistakes with the steps I've taken so far?

If you do not save template.pmd at anytime, then it should not increase in file size.

If possible, try setting the file attributes for the template to 'read-only' in the operating system.

Thanks.

What I did in the end was just to clear everything I did off template.pmd everytime I was creating a new brochure. It works, so far. But with this information you've provided, it should make my job easier.

Thanks again! :)

Hi, afrodytie,

Have you tried saving your original as a template, i.e. template.PMT? Then when you want to create a new brochure, it makes a copy of original; the original is untouched.

If you are going to constantly use a file as a template, creating the template then saving as .PMT is preferr4ed. This will help alleviate any chance of file corruption that is inherent in PM files that have been edited, changed and resaved too many times. When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.

Thanks all for the help... creating the template has made my job much easier... :D
