What may be the cause and remedy that the menu that appears on the right mouse button push against any file in Windows Explorer showing hourglass for very long time
as it seems to me? I have windows xp sp2.

What kind of active spyware/anti-virus monitors do you have running?

Download ShellExView v1.16 from Run the program and it will scan for all shell extensions. After it is finished click the type button to group all context menu entries together. Disable the non-Microsoft entries (scroll to the right to see the company) one by one and see if the problem is solved. If disabling one does not solve the problem, re-enable it and disable the next one and continue this process until you find the culprit.

Let me confess. I knew about ShellExView but it suggest to spend a lot of time. I have to add that the problem of long period of time that spending at opening of file exists only just after start of Windows and desappeares after some time. And there was no such problem some weeks ago. That is why I doubt that this ShellExView is a real remedy in this particular case.
Excuse my poor English, please!

What is the situation like when tried from Safe Mode?

How about Normal Mode but as a different User?

What clues are there in the Event Viewer?

I plucked up my heart at last and use ShellExView to check role of the context menu handlers. As far as I have only 6 non-Microsoft handlers I tried to disable them first one by one and then disabled them all, restart computer...and nothing changed in any case. The most annoying part is that I can't see any consistent pattern. There is no problem with exe files. I have, for example, many pdf and doc files and they show me the hourglass for 10-20 sec. It does not depend on size of file.
So, is there any other idea?

The same.

Nothing interesting. There you will see some examples
Windows saved user registry while an application or service was still using the registry during log off. The memory used by the user's registry has not been freed. The registry will be unloaded when it is no longer in use.
This is often caused by services running as a user account, try configuring the services to run in either the LocalService or NetworkService account.

The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: Service started.

I checked all your ideas and none of them help. Sorry!

Have you checked in Task Manager, Performance tab, to see if CPU is running at high percentage usage? Also, in same place, check Processes tab to see what other apps are running at the same time.

Are the files on the local machine or on a network drive or similar?

Some general things to try.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Explorer.

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Select both boxes.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

HOW TO: Verify Unsigned Device Drivers in Windows XP

If they don't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

G0AOZ (TechnicalUser)Have you checked in Task Manager, Performance tab, to see if CPU is running at high percentage usage?
Following your advice I saw that next moment I tried to open file CPU was running to zero and then slowly it performance rose to some 30-50 percents.

check Processes tab to see what other apps are running at the same time.
I was not enough smart to see something unusual.

That did not help.
Some unsigned drivers were found but all of them were preinstalled by Dell.

I'd done something wrong answering to forum because I do not see my previous answer. Sorry!

Maybe it's time to defragment the hard drive. How many options appear on the menu when it's displayed?

Try the free version of "Ewido" now called "AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5"

If you run "Hijack This", it might be a help in determining your problem if you post the log.

Diancecht (Programmer)Maybe it's time to defragment the hard drive. How many options appear on the menu when it's displayed? The usual options Open, New, Print, Send To, Open with, cut, copy, etc all in all 15.
I defragmented hard drive a week ago.

I use a restore point of month ago, June 1 and in vain.
Are you able to see from the Process List in Task Manager any one Process that is using the bulk of the CPU cycles?
That is System Idle Process (99). When, for example, I try to open Word file Winword starts working and using some CPU resource (30-50) when hourglass vanishes.
Removing adware & spyware
I use AdWare, Spybot and ZoneAlarm.
I will try Hijack This.

Have you tried running msconfig to see what processes are starting up @ boot? You can try Diagnostic Startup or Selective Startup to see if you can spot the problem. If you choose Selective Startup, click on the Startup tab to view all apps booting up when you start Windows. I use Selective Startup to speed up the boot process. I don't need every app running in the background using resources when I can click on Programs & start it from there when needed.
An excellent (and free) tool is Process Explorer available @ download.com & many other sites. It gives more detail than Task Manager. It will tell you what app started what process, amount of resources it's using and the company name of the app running. It's a help in deciding if you need to run an app @ Startup and finding spyware too.
You say it only started some weeks ago. Have you downloaded or installed anything new before the problem first started? WindowsDefender is an excellent spyware tool available @ (also free).
Hope these suggestions help.

Id also run a scan here to check behind your programs. I do the same with mine as no single program catches everything.

Also even if you did a restore recently, chkdsk and defrag should be ran monthly. So Id advise running those soon.
