i sent my drive to a reputable data recovery service and after looking at the drive three times, they told me that the files I wanted were irretrievable because they'd somehow been deleted and overwritten by the computer when it crashed. all of my other files made it. Is there any other alternative, any remote possibility, of accessing these files?

Have you tried directory snoop. There is a 30 day evaluation @ winfiles.com.

I would first try using Tiramisu for NT (they have a demo version which will let you know if you can recover the files before buying it) and Ontrack's Pro data recovery (Easyrecovery), which also has a free demo version you can use to see what data it can recover. If neither of these can find the files, the only other method short of sending the drive to a clean room facility such as OnTrack, is to manually edit the sectors with a program such as Patch or Diskedit, but this requires a good understanding of the data format on the disk.
Hope this helps.

I had a disk which I had ghosted an image over. I thought it was 100% gone. The files were very important and I was ...gulp...thinking I'd be looking for a new job, anyhow....I used Powerquest Lost and Found and managed to recover enough of the files to make the enduser quite happy. Luckily for me the files I recovered were the ones they were looking for. No white coat lab, no hepa filters, not miricles from beyond...just Lost and Found.

Hi Daveyoh,

I'm currently facing the same problem. However, i can't seem to find the download site for Powerquest Lost and Found. went to it was mentioned that this product has been discontinued.

Really need to find the solution urgently. Hope u can help.

Thanks in advance.

I not sure about the "reputable data recovery" service, however, from your description, those files should be recoverable barring any physical (mechanical) problems with the drive.

The so called 'demo' versions of data recovery software is not advisable as they are crippled versions.

Ontrack's Easyrecovery is a consumer product and is limited, as is all of the 'demo' versions of DR software.

Let me know if you have solved and recovered your files as we all are still learning and increases our knowledge base.

This is not a help for a "right now" need, but with patience lost and found shows up regularly on ebay. I've seen 3-4 copies in the last 2 months.

Diogenes10,
Thanks for the valuable info.

Anyone,
When i used Final Data to scan, all i found is some system files and tracking log. Does this mean, my data files could not be located?

If i would like to locate program files like canon printer driver and macromedia flash, what should i expect to see? i mean could the filename be changed after being detected?

Thanks.

Ontrack's Easyrecovery changes filename in certain cases, but that's all i can say. I've never used Final Data. It's not helping me much (Ontrack's), fortunately my files are not on that disk, some of my other files are ther, unfortunately. Like WeNeedHelp888, it's the program files that i'm trying to recover, somehow it cannot even find windows and program files folder on the disk.

I'm not sure, it just crashed, like, two hours ago, so i might still get results in time.
