When inserting a word document into a filemaker pro database, I get the following error which I cannot find a reference to anywhere.

"Filemaker Pro cannot complete the operation because of an OLE (0x80004002) error."

I only get this when trying to insert a word document on an XP Professional computer. Our 2000 and 98 computers are fine. I have tried Office 97, 2000 and XP and all 3 come up with the same error when inserting a Word document. We are running Filemaker Pro 3.0 but I have also downloaded the demo version of 6 and it does the same thing.

Anyone have any ideas? I have tried everything I can think of.

Thanks.

which version of FM?
how do u insert it?

update your FM ODBC drivers....older version had this component shipped separately....
All the best!

Thanks for the reply. This does not work with FM 3 or the FM 6 trial download from the website.

It happens when trying to view a word document inserted into a container in FM on an XP machine. It also happens when trying to insert a word document into a container on an XP machine. I have even tried creating a brand new database from scratch thinking maybe the old one was corrupted but the same OLE error comes up.

Where would I get the FM ODBC drivers from?

Thanks.

Filemaker Pro 3.0 version 5 and Filemaker Pro 6.0 version 1 are the 2 I have tried to do this on.

ok I got the same error on win2000 pro and FM pro 6
solution:
on container field:
right-click --> Insert Object --->Create From File--> Browse.. and [x] Link needs to be check ON!

All the best!

I tried it and I get no error.
The problem now is that since it is a link in the database and the database is company wide, once the computer is turned off that created the link, no one can get to the file.
Sounds like we may have to spring for the new version and buy the support option for it. I am surprised no one else is coming across this yet.
Thanks.

-->LOL well ...yeah...if u turn it OFF

what u could do is store those word docs on the same machine or the FM sever/machine can have a mapped drive to the "some other file server" where u guys can store your docs...

"Sounds like we may have to spring for the new version "
-->no need

Can't ever make 'em happy. Goes with the job I guess. I ran the option of linking past the database users and they say they lose certain key functions compared to embedding the whole file. Autosave, email options, etc.

Thanks for the ideas. Wouldn't we have to buy the new version for support? I highly doubt FM would still support 3.0.

Hi!
Like I said hoops....I have the new FMPro 6 and the same error is there! If they need to edit the file...well righ-click -->Edit Document.(auto save can be set in MS word as well as in FM for the DB itself)
EMail?-- what aspcet.
support is independent:

again, your choice....don't let ignorant management teach you how to do you job ;-)

u can also use scripts to "help guide" users insert these dos corretly...there is also a plugin Troy that does a lot of this stff....but with some patience u can do it your self.

We have had some problems which all seem to go back to installing Filemaker on XP as well. I re-installed that machine as Windows 2000, but problems still keep ocurring. My guess is that XP may have screwed up everything beyond repair.

You might try the Fileville site, at < But I have found this board to be better.

I would love for us to get rid of Filemaker altogether and get a database program that actually works. Unfortunately, one user is mainly why we have not. Like many users, she hates change just because it is change.

then keep you fingers crossed (FM_? is about to....)

Looks like this is going to work! The only thing I have to do is put the executable for Microsoft Word out on a network drive to use as the icon for the file. Otherwise, it disappears on someone else who has a different version of word than the person who inserted the original file.

Thanks for the help!

no need to copy winword.exe .....never keep random_file.exe on the server...simply copy the icon file .ico and user can change the icon as in "Edit Package Package" (object packager) --> Innsert Icon...button and have them browse to G:\\some_location\my_icon where the icon file is located.
All the best!

I need to give it a .dll or .exe that has the word icon in it. There is no word icon file on the computer, it's embedded in the exe. Unless there is a website to download one from.

Also, is there any way to enlarge the inserted file name? Once it's inserted, it's so small that's it's barely readable.

Thanks.
