I have a desktop connected by LAN and a laptop connected by WLAN, to a Linksys WRT54G router. I have internet on both computers. I can't seem to get file and printer sharing to work. The laptop finds the workgroup but only shows itself. The desk top says unable to browse the network. I used the wizard and setup disk. Any ideas.

Thanks Scott

i had a similar problem with laptop and desktop connected via crossover cable. i pinged self and others. then i ran network connection wizard on both machines, and it worked fine. if you have more than one nic enabled on the laptop, you may have to disable all except the one connected to desktop.
file sharing:
i clicked on each drive/folder and chose sharing option.

Are there any errors listed in the Event Viewers?

There is a website( ) devoted entirely to Linksys routers and especially to the WRT54G router.

This may be obvious but are they both in the same workgroup?

Are you browsing My Network Places? Ive seen it where sometimes you cant see another computer that way but if you do a search for computer name it will show up.

Is this XP Home or Pro?

It is my desktop. I brought the laptop to work and it went right into the workgroup. (created a new user as to not change any setting from home) The same router 3 LAN machines and 2 WLAN machines. Running WEP encription. All computers show up and the laptop is on all of them. I will look very close at the desktop tonight. I am running personal Tiny Firewall. Maybe that is the block. I will also look at the event viewer. I will also search rather than My Network Places.
They are both XP Home.

Thanks

Thanks for all your help. It was the firewall. The router gave the defalt IP address to the firewall. During instalation I had to change the router IP address and the firewall never got it. I have not had to do much to this firewall so I did not even know where these settings were. This firewall passed the hacker whacker scan with excelent results I highly recommend it. Tiny Personel Firewall.

Thanks again I learned a lot about networking.
