File Sharing - Server Service is not Started

When trying to set a directory to allow file sharing, I get an error "Server Service is not Started". After viewing Services I notice the Server service is not started (you probably could have guessed). When trying to start Server I get the error "Could not start server service on local computer. Error 2001: The specified driver is invalid".

This seems to have started after an automatic Windows Update was performed 10/04/2003. Before this I was sharing Files and Printers. Now I can only see other computers on the network. Others can't see this one. Obviously because I can't set sharing.

It look likes I need a new driver. Windows Updates does not provide any driver updates.

Does anyone have any guidance about this?

At last on my installation the core file, srvsvc.dll, is the same as the distribution CD version.

Use either Expand d:\i386\srvsvc.dl_ c:\windows\system32\srvsvc.dll in Recovery Console, or use the facility of MSCONFIG to expand and replace system files.

Can you be more specific about how to replace srvsvc.dll. I don't know how to use Recovery Console or MSCONFIG.

Sorry for the lack of knowledge but I'm new to WinXP. This is my first problem with it. I don't want to make things worse.

Will SFC /SCANNOW detect corruption and replace srvsvc.dll?

. You could always Start, Run, sfc /scannow
And this might in the end be the best idea. You will need your XP CD.
