Hi all,
Anyone have suggestions on a way to go about doing this in win98: 2 computers, both running 98, one has cable modem, one has 56k modem. The goal is for both to be able to access an access db that will reside on one of the computers and edit it/share it over the internet. I'm not necessarily looking for "The best way" to do this, just different ideas. Thanks!

You can either:
1. network computers together. Lots of inexpensive kits you
can buy to do this. You have a lot more control of this Database if it resides on one of your local systems. Also,
you don't have to worry about not having or losing internet
connection. Go to a computer store and talk to someone about options for home networking.
2. use free storage on commercial server. Many sites (ex. Xdrive) will let you have free drive space on their server. Both computers can access this. Search for some other sites that provide this service.

Let me know if any specific questions on above.

Thanks

i dont know if this will work but,

this will only work one way around and it will depend on which machine has the cable modem.
assuming the machine that has the cable modem is the work machine and has the files you need to work on in the evening.

the computer with a cable modem is perminatly connected to the internet if the machine is turned on and the software running, a firewall is a good idea, and an ftp program (such as cute ftp) will be required. i think that as this machine is permiatly connected it should have a static IP address from the ISP you use.

then all you need to do is fire up your 56k machine at home, start your ftp program and dial up your machine at work, viola you can download all your files from your work machine.

hope this helps a little

as stated above, going over the net for two puters in one place is way overkill and opens you up to hacking and degradation, losses, etc, you likely dont need.

just peer to peer it with a cable. simple, not expensive and safer.

its usually called home networking if you search the net for info.

I think the easiest way is using the free storage on a central server. This way both computers can acces the same memory and therefore upload and download.

sorry, i thot the original said they were in same place.

'access the same memory'-you must mean same data i hope.
but if they are separated then this last note is prolly right, and certainly cheaper.
