our file server has dumped. We have new one ordered, however it is going to be a while.
What I want to do is just redirect the IP/Hostname to another server. EX take fileserver1 dns record and point it to the fileserver2 IP address. I did that, when I ping fileserver1 it does resolve to the fileserver2 IP but when I go to use explorer \\fileserver1 I get an error saying there are duplicate names on the network.
I am at a loss I have removed the server from the active directory and checked our dhcp records to make sure it wasn't there

A couple of questions for you?
1. Although Fileserver1 has crashed is it still on the network?
2. Is fileserver2 multi-homed (ie has multiple network interfaces). I have seen this behavior in this situation
3. Are you using static IPs for your servers and not DHCP assigned ones.
4. Do you have host files setup (under c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc)still pointing to the old server IP

I think you would have to remove the fileserver1 record. Then setup an alias record for it pointing to fileserver2.

Hope This Helps,

Good Luck!

I have setup an alias record, with the same result.

answers to the questions,
1.fileserver1 is dead and off the wire
2.It has multiples, but only one is enabled
3.Yes, I am using statics
4.No LMHOST configuration (or host) we have win2k boxes
