File Selection Diaglogue Box (For Dummies) 1

I read through this thread and the MS help sheets on a FileDialogue object and I am still lost. I am not sure where to put this code, or how to get a button to show up on my form to generate this dialogue box once clicked.

I should also mention, I can usually read VB and understand it for the most part, but do not know it as a programming language.

If anyone has the patience and time to help me out it would be greatly appreciated.

create a new module and drop the code in it.

In design view pick a command button control and place it on your form. In the properties window go to "Events" and click on the ellipes of the on click event. Choose code builder. This should bring you to the on click event of the command button. In this case you need to do something with the folder name one you return it. Something like

I'm sorry, my goal was to pick a particular file not a directory, is there something on there to pick a particular file?

I also use the API although in newer versions of Access you have several options of picking a file. I like using the API because of portability.

Excellent thank you for your help. I think I am about halfway down.

I used the code from the second link you posted, and I can navigate to, and select the file I wish to import. Now I need it (after selecting open) to run the macro I created to import the data from the text file into the table using the import specifications (all of this is in the macro I made)

Hopefully you when you say "macro" you are referring to a sub routine not a macro. But if you mean subroutine then pass the file in as a parameter. Ex

So I converted the Macro I had created to code as you requested (done through MS Access, I did not wrtie this myself). As I mentioned, I do not know VB, so I was copying and pasting code to try to get it to work. With the code below it "works", but is not pretty. The dialogue box pops up, and I can select a file, but the filters do not limit the options to .txt files only. Any ideas? Please don't laugh too hard

now wherever you need the file name you can use "strFileName" such as

You do not have to post the import code, it is proven to work and there should be no reason you have to modify it. Place that code in its own module seperate from your form module. They only thing we need to see is the code calling the function.

MajP, thank you VERY VERY VERY much for all of yoru help. I got things working exactly how I needed to. In one "step" I import two different user selected files, and have another process to save the file via a "save as" dialogue box. I can't express how grateful I am for your help.

P.S. I am aware of the star feature, which has been done, this was just very helpful and used in a very important project I was put on
