File Search Question

Is there a setting somewhere that determines what types of files the file search function will search for text?

I'm suffering with an application that was moved from Server 2000 to a new Server 2003 machine. We have program routines in plain text files, but with a .fex suffix. On the old box I could search for routines containing specific text and it worked, on the new box it only seems to find .txt files containing the text. I'm not the server admin so if you have an answer please keep it simple. Thanks.
