I have a Windows 2000 Server. There is a file in a folder that I want to change the permissions to read-only for selected users on.

I browse to the directory, right click the file and select properties. I select 'Security' for a given user, but 'Modify', 'Read & Execute', 'Read' and 'Write' are all dark grey and I cannot uncheck any of them.

I can select 'Deny' or 'Advanced' but not sure how to proceeed.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Do you have "Allow inherentable permissions from parent to propagate to this object" selected (should be at the bottom)? If you do, it's pulling the permissions from the folder above it. Try turning it off, and then see if you can change your permissions then.
