Hi,

I am sure that this question has been asked in the past, I have gone through the forums and cannot find anything that is really that helpful.

The problem...
- I want to be able to setup a shared directory that gives users/groups the ability to view, append, and execute files and folders. But I do not want the users or groups to have rights to delete and modify data.
- What I have found thus far
-- I can deny rights to delete, but I am having a hard time find a right for changing data.
-- Also, append does not seem to be doing anything. I setup append, but the file is compeletely open to changes, not just appending information but changing existing data.

If anyone has a link to or any know-how on this, the help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks.

I did all this a few times and do not get the results that I am looking for.

This is what I want to do... maybe I am asking for too much...

-I want to be able to copy files and rename them
-I want to be able to create folders
-I want to be able to create new files and add data

What I am getting...

-I can create a new file, but cannot rename it from the default naming from windows, seems to be due the delete not being enabled.
-I want to be able to copy an existing file, rename it and edit it, not letting do that
-I need the ability to create new folders, but with the setting listed in your link, cannot do that..

Not sure if this makes much sense, does not seem that I am asking for a heck of a lot from server2003??

RE:

NOTES BELOW:

-I can create a new file, but cannot rename it from the default naming from windows, seems to be due the delete not being enabled.

This requires Modify/Change rights due to the rename. (It is considered a delete to rename an item)

-I want to be able to copy an existing file, rename it and edit it, not letting do that

This requires Modify/Change rights due to the rename. The edit would be allowed if it is an addition only.

-I need the ability to create new folders, but with the setting listed in your link, cannot do that..

You can check the box for Create Folders/Append Data
and Create Files/Write Data

I would play with the permissions by allowing everything from traverse Folder down to Change Permissions. Then try to Deny Delete only. Then try it with Delete Subfolder and Files only. Play with these permissions until you get your desired result.

Hope this helps.

you just need to set permissions on a special system user CREATOR OWNER, with modify permissions and no delete permissions, thats it

Nicolasvdb,

This will give the user the permission to change information though? I do not want the users to be able to change any information, but they should be able to append information.

Append to directory is Write permission. Append to file such as Word is not possible this way due to the way Word works.

With having the permissions setup so that:
- Create Folders / Append Data Allow is unchecked
- Delete Subfolders and Files Allow is unchecked
- Delete Allow is unchecked

I can view files, not change filenames, folder names, edit or append data. Also, I cannot create folders.

So my question is... Is there anything that is either inherent or an addon that can give me a little more flexibility with file and folder permissions?

it´ll never work.

- I want to be able to setup a shared directory that gives users/groups the ability to view, append, and execute files and folders. But I do not want the users or groups to have rights to delete and modify data.

who shall decide what the user wants to do?
append data => allow
change data => forbid

both aktions need the write permission, think about that.

have u heard of volume shadow copy, there u can at least have a "filehistory

Maybe you need to utilize something like Access for a database style data collector where you would easily be able to allow them append writes without changing or deleting anything.

If U use Server 2003, 1st of all U better check the root on DFS (Distributed File System). Have U created the folder that U want to be shared in the network ??
After that we will do the next step.
