I recently tried to open a DBF file in Visual Foxpro 6 and received a 'File not open' error message. This was a kind of a 'stupid' error message since I knew that the file was not open because that was what I was trying to do, open the file. I copied the file, deleted the old DBF and index files, renamed the copy, and recreated the indexes. This little bit of voodoo worked but I'd like to know what happened. Has anybody experienced this before? I have experienced corrupt index files which are easily fixed but this problem had my knees knockin' for awhile.

I have never ran across this error, but what might have happened was this. If you have a structural compound index for the table, it is automatically opened everytime you open the table. If the index had become corrupt, it's feasible that when you attempted to open the table, it was attempting to open the index, but could not.

my $.02

Jon
