I get the same error that was addressed in this thread back in 2006 thread223-1286211 about acrobat not being able to find a .pdf file after downloading it from the web. I don't have time to look through 300+ faq's. I get
"there was an error opening this document. file cannot be found". I guess its trying to open a .pdf in the browser.
thanks for any assistance.

when you get the prompt to Open this file, or Save this file, Save it. Then when it's been saved locally, click on Open, or go to Recent Documents, and Open from there.

thanks for the response Fred. I don't get the prompt to open or save. it flashes up a small window with a download progress bar (I think) that lasts about half a second. It doesn't even have a path for the destination folder. I was thinking I had somehow set the acrobat downloads to the wrong default folder for acrobat to see them.

Raddy -
It sounds like you've got an odd setting in your browser for handling downloads. I don't see anything that would apply in my IE6 - do you have some other security add-ons or download managers ? Try removing them. when you click on a link to a PDF when browsing, you should get a box that asks if you want to Open the file or Save it. If you're not getting that, some other process has taken over. Are you running Win2K, XP, Vista or ?? What security add-ons ?

ooops. sorry about not giving OS. it is win2k with sp4. I have kaspersky but the license expired in Feb. I am not at my pc right now. I think there is a download manager but I don't know what it is. if it did download a .pdf, shouldn't I be able to find it with search? I will try to
remove the dl manager if I can find it.

thanks

Adobe has their own download manager - I remember running into it when downloading a fresh Reader for someone. something on your machine is 'handling' the download for you, and causing the problem. Eliminate the 'middleman' and you should solve the problem.

Hi Fred, I found a download manager in metacafe pro. I uninstalled it. the download progress window changed to the standard MS but it still flashed up for only a second and did not prompt for open/save, then disappeared, and still gave me the same error. I did not find any other manager. I guess I don't know how to find it if it does not have "down" or "manag" or "load" in the file/filename.
I will keep looking. thanks

Raddy - "download manager appears briefly, then disappears" - sounds like a Pop-Up Blocker is causing the problem! We have that nuisance with our FileNet Web Access - have to caution folks to disable pop-up blockers - there's one in IE, another in Yahoo and Google toolbars. Get rid of the pop-up blockers and I'll bet you have control again!

Hi Fred,
I'm back. I un-installed that google trash called doubleclick and did a "repair installation" on the adobe.
now the download of a .pdf works ok.
amazing how these companies think they can do whatever they want with other people's property.

Russell - Glad you got it solved! Some of our users keep their Google toolbars because they like/need Google Earth. They do learn to keep the Pop-Up blocker disabled.
