File Movement Errors on Hard Drive

I had a friend drop this question by me:

He has XP pro media edition with dual 80GB internal drives. His problem he encounters is that he can save and store data fine on one of the drives (D but everytime he moves the file or files on that drive (D they become 0 KB files and are un-usable. I told him to ensure that they were not Hidden, Read-Only or have any Securities set on them. My other concern was corrupted hard drive sectors. He also mentioned that the other drive (C crashed recently so this could play some role as well. I was curious as to what else may be the source of his problem.

This sort of sounds like it's a mirrored set and the mirror is broken and he is trying to copy data from the good drive to the bad.

I thought so too at first, but he mentioned an example of moving some photo files from one folder on the suspect drive (D to a subfolder on the save drive (D. He says that is when the error occurs and all the files end up 0KB and unusable.

Does the same thing happen if he copies and pastes the files.

Yes, that's exactly what he was doing and the error persisted. We may have narrowed it down to some inconsitancy or corruption with his file system table(s). He's looking into that atm. Any other insight's would be awesome

What happens if files are copied/moved the othr way, from c to d?

We're not sure, we haven't tried a D to C copy/paste. He was able to move the original files on D: to a flash drive to back them up while we monkey around with the problem.

Have you used Event Viewer to check whether there are any related errors in either 'Application' or 'System'?

Has he run ChkDsk /r on both drives or by right-clicking the drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Select both boxes?

Have you tried setting the Bios to any Safe Default settings?

Try checking this setting, IE/ Tools/ Internet Options/ Security/ Internet/ Custom Level/ Drag and Drop or Copy and Paste.

Does Send To work?


Checking the RAM may be worth a try too.

Some general things to try.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Explorer.

Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?).

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.
