File Maker Dos Prompt to Open cash drawer via COM1

I am trying to send a single ASCII character to the serial port COM1 in order to open a cash drawer. Since this is difficult to do under window xp environment, is there a way to get access to DOS prompt from File Maker ? Is there any other way to send a single character to the serial port in File Maker ?

One quick way would be to write a doc batch fiel and then use a script to call that file at the time it was needed. you can use the dde send function in filemaker to call the batch file.
