File Locked For Editing 4

Recently my users have been experiencing a problem with "Files being locked for editing", normally the user that is stated as presently using the file is the same person trying to open the file.
Upon accessing the file, the user is presented with the option to open as read only, or be notified when available.

If you have any ideas on how i can put an end to this problem, pls reply.

I expect your problem has arisen because somehow the files in question have all been changed to "Read Only".

Such a situation can occur, for example, when files are restored from a "backup CD" - because the CD "defaults" to "Read Only" (because one cannot write to a CD disk if it is a normal read-only CD)

To correct the problem, you only need to highlight all the files, and right-click. Then choose "Properties" and un-check "Read Only".

Hope this resolves your problem. Please advise.

Thanks for the reply, but this does not rectify the problem. The permissions
are all set to full control, read is not checked.

I am having the exact same problem - it started about two weeks ago.
When I try and open a file from a Server the message pops up. I have scanned both the server and work station for viruses - as well disabled the "realtime" Virus scanner on both client and server.
As well when the file is opening on the server it is creating a temp file with .in2 extensions and they are not deleted when the file is closed??

What kind of files are we talking about (i.e. Word, Excel,...)? Where are the files located (i.e. local drive, network drive,...)?

If Word files is one of the issues have you checked for TEMP files that are not being deleted when the file is closed? For instance a file called test.doc may have temp file created with the name ~test.doc while the doc is being worked on. If the temp file exists when the document reopens then Word thinks the document is being worked on by someone.

If you copy the file from one directory to another will it open without the Read Only error message?

The files are only word and excel, and are located on the network drive. If i copy the file from the network drive to a different location,it will open.
pls keep supplying the advice, it helps to narrow down the issue.

A similar situation happened here and it seemed to be related to a file that was not closed properly. The problem may be resolved if the file is re-opened by the same userid from the same client machine and then closed properly.

Branlon, can you tell me if your similar situation involved multiple documents or just one. We are experiencing this issue with many docs spread over a number of users.

Hi all,

I have managed to rectify the problem. What it all came down to, was the virus software. We are using Innoculate IT, on both the servers and the clients, and after constantly playing with the settings, i found that by disabling the "Virus Wall Incoming Mode" on the realtime manager, the files all become fully accessable to users without the constant "files locked for editing" error popping up. This solution is only a standby, i will attempt to re-install the virus software and then re-enable the "virus wall incoming mode" and then see what happens.

When I try to access an Excel worksheet saved to a floppy disk, it tells me that the file is read-only or the server is not responding. I tried copying it to the desktop via Windows Explorer, and then opening it, but could not get it to open. Any advice? Properties show that it is a 21KB file, and that Archives is checked(not read-only). Thanks for any insight.

The first thing to look at, is maybe the file is corrupted.
Try copying the file to floppy again, and see what happens.

Hi, I am having the same problem with a word document. I have tried turning off my AntiVirus(Norton) but it does not rectify the situation. I also noted that if i open the file in wordpad it's fine but if I open it in word it tells me its locked for edit, Any more help anyone

I am having the exact same problem as Hannan. I have InoculateIT as well and my problem was also solved by turning off Virus-wall Incoming Mode. When did this start occuring for you. Mine started around the time we got 33.08 signature for version 4.53. Start date for us was 2/20/02.
