file link in javascript dropdown menu not working (netscape only)

Getting flustered over here...

I cannot get my file links (ex. file://fil-nw02-08/mmodoc/mmo/personnel/SC_phonelist.doc) to work within my ".js" drop down menu. It works fine in IE, and works within Netscape when web site resides on a file server...once I placed site on web server, the file links would not work in Netscape.
Any ideas or suggesions would be very much appreciated.

try or to use a relative path or an absolute one starting by http and not file://

neither one of those suggestion seemed to work, but thanks...does anybody know if this could be a bug in Netscape v4.73 ?
