file extension .aab what is it?

NT 4.0 server using Backoffice.
number of files in winnt\system32 directory having been created intermittently, but up to 10mb used. what could these be? is it safe to remove them? filenames are like: _cu.aab _gc.aab

Just to add a bit more to this! Do you use a Sybase database engine, prob build 5.5.04 or 5.5.05 of Sybase SQL Anywhere, if so they are just random files the database creates.

You need to stop the database service and they can be deleted with out any probs... Or at least I have found so far!!!
 
Thannks guys, yes we do use sql database engines, and I had planned on moving them elsewhere just to see what happened. Authorware did flicker across my screen while researching this. help is appreciated guys.
