I want to export data from a dos version of Macola but I need to know what the file definitions are so I can then import it into another database. Does any one know where there exists documentation showing the file definitions.
There are legacy Data Dictionary Files (DDF's) available for the Btrieve version. With them, you could link the tables in Access and then export the data. If you ran the export that's built into the software, it creates a fixed length file that is not really documented anywhere that I've seen.
Assumming you are using the btrieve version, you could connect to the .ddfs using a tool such as crystal reports, then select every field in the file. Export the whole thing to excel or .csv, then from there you should be able to get it anywhere else it needs to go.
Just out of curiosity what is the purpose of the export? Is it a one time export or do you need an ongoing interface between Macola and the other application?

I have a set of DRMs for version 6 DOS, but not prior versions. These define where the columns exist in text and btrieve files. If you can be more specific on what you need, I might be able to look it up for you. I looked to see if they were in the archives on exact's website, but didn't find them there electronically.
Thank You for all the responses. Where do I find the ddfs in docucent form. This is a onetime export of the data. I am not sure at this time exactly what data I will be exporting.
I didn't find them DRMs stored anywhere electronically & they are 2 - 2inch thick volumes, so I can't scan & email easily. If you have ddfs installed in your data folder, you can open the tables with pervasive or export to text or link via access or excel. If you don't have them, you'll need to submit a url so I can file transfer you ddfs & help you look up what you need to know. We need to know specific version of macola you are on, too.
The version of Macola is 6.2.1. I am currently looking at Items, customer, vendor, Bill_of_materials and chart of accounts to convert. I looked in the data directory and there were no ddf files.
Just a note. I know it is old software, but I believe the version 6 ddfs were a licensed product of Netcellent. They are still in operation and would probably be happy to sell the product. My memory may not be serving me here but I don't think that the ddfs were part of Macola 6 for DOS.
Yes, there are ddfs for 6, 6.2, 6.3 and Netcellent 6.6 & 6.7. However, Netcellent redid with an 8 digit date, so you have to use the correct ones for the 6.2 product. Still need an ftp url & I will zip & upload for you.
