Is there any programs that can search for a specific file type or types in a directory and then copy the directory structure with ONLY those searched files to another folder. We are trying to free up file space by removing certain files that have not been used in over 2 years off the server. But we are removing cetain file types only. These files were used in a program we don't use anymore but need to be kept just in case. Alot of the files have the same name but are located in different folders so I would like to keep the directory structure intact since there are many MANY subfolders. Anyone have any ideas of what i'm asking for and if it can be done?

It can be scripted, but I don't know of an existing app that can copy with the level of detail that you are asking for.

Why not do this:
1. Copy entire directory to new location
2. Do a search on the new directory, sort by file type, then delete all files EXCEPT the ones you want to keep.
3. Do a search on the old directory, delete the files you kept on the previous search

robocopy.exe

You can find the app in the W2K Resource.

Robocopy, huh? I have visions of a cheesy motorized Peter Weller walking from one filing cabinet to another very slowly. I'll read up on it. Thanks all for your help.

make sure you get the "switches" correct... it can almost take longer than doing it by hand since it builds indexes and tables and then copies...

it's not cheesy; but it is delicious!!
