Used ARCserver v9.0 tape to restore files to new Win2003 file server. All folder/files copied over with read only attributes and I am unable to change the attribute. Has anyone else had this issue? Thanks, Kismetech
How were the files saved and restored? By copying them? NTFS permissions are not maintained from the original by doing this method. You probably don't have the permissions to change the attributes on the files and will have to take ownership of them to do so.
Thanks Seaspray0! I appreciate the help. The files were restored from backup tape to the new Windows 2003 file server using BrightStor ARCServe. But it was the Share permissions at fault.
We were finally able to determine (with technicians from both Microsoft and ArcServe on the line) that the default share permissions which were transferred with the files from our old Windows 2000 server to our new 2003 server were changed. By default, Windows 2000 gives "everyone" the full control, change and read share permissions. We then controlled access via the security rights.
Windows 2003 by default gives "everyone" only read permissions. The share permissions were at fault, not the ArcServe file transfer. When we kept trying to remove the read only permissions, they just kept returning and we could not figure out why. As soon as we changed the share permissions to allow full control, change and read, everyone was able to access the appropriate files with their security rights and life was good again.
