File Access Error

We have been getting a File Access Error intermittenly for our system.

App environment:
Foxpro 2.6 running on a Netware 3.12 server.
Largest File size close to 1 GB.

Clients:
Around 150 client machines
mostly Win2K using the Netware Gateway.
Some Win98 using the Netware Service.

At first we though this might be file size issue since the system has beeb collecting data for 7 years. Old records are deleted and all the tables packed. The error is still happening. We looked at several areas as referenced by the good folks here in the forums. WE checked the Nwclient settings however since most of the systems are using the MS supplied Netware Gateway, these controls are not available.

It also import to note that the system has been humming without a hitch for the last 6+ years. For no apparent reason the file access error starts happening.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Bert,
I have no specific answer, but I question any system that upgrades only certain pieces and then complains about how it doesn't work like it used to. Running a newer version of Netware Server and current Novell clients (with non-default settings) seems to be working for our applications.

Bert,
last week i faced with similar problem -
"File access denied" error,
in much simply situation
(Foxpro 2.0, single user NT 4.0, local file...).

Bad modul:
...
use loc_tab
copy to loc_tab.txt deli
copy file loc_tab.txt to g:\net_tab.txt && access denied

Good modul:
...
use loc_tab
copy to loc_tab.txt deli
use
flush
copy file loc_tab.txt to g:\net_tab.txt && access permit

I suppose, delay between commands copy to and copy relaxed
file loc_tab.txt.
(Problem arised suddenly by user with 1.0 Ghz machine,
for years slower machine without a hitch...)

May be your problem is similar ...

Thanks for your input guys. The other problem we are facing is that we do not have any of the source code. This app was developed by another shop and we do not have any of the source code.

Also, make sure you have enough available file handles on the server. This is a setting that the net admin will have to set but it does matter. 150 users having say 20 or 30 open files at a time adds up quick.

I'm not sure where i can set this files information.
We are running Novell Netware 3.12.

Thanks,
Al
