I suppose this is more a Win2k issue than MS Office issue...

I was changing machines, and archived all my files, including a .pst file for email (Outlook 2000/XP)

On the new machine I tried to import or open the .pst file in Outlook.

I get the message "File access is denied. You do not have the permission required to access the file c:\Doc....\bu.pst

I am logged in as Administrator. Do I have to recreate the profile of the original machine? i checked the file security, and it looks like I should have full control.

Thanks. I just tried this, but to no avail. I still get the same warning. Any other ideas?

Please follow the steps carefully from my original link. You must be the local Administrator to do these steps.
If you have asserted ownership properly, the message will go away.

I am the local administrator, I believe. I think I followed the steps.

I'm logged in as Administrator

I right click on the file and select properties.
Select "Security" tab and "Advanced"
Select "Owner" tab
The current owner is Medulla\Administrator.
Click "Apply"

The steps are seemingly a bit different for XP, as the instructions would indicate.

That's me, I think.

Would it have to do with the domain? This machine isn't in the same domain. It is an isolated machine.

Is Medulla the machine name or the Domain name?
Try to add the Group Everyone with full permissions.

Did you burn your files to a cd? If so, then when you copy them back to the hard drive of the new machine you will have to remove the "Read Only" attribute. Right click on the file, then click properties and un-check the "Read Only" box.

I don't know. I'm lost.

Apparently it shouldn't be a permissions or ownership problem, according to MS anyways:
I had already removed the read-only attribute.
I also tried adding the Group everyone with full permissions.

Seems others have had this problem too, with no ready solution.

I had the same problem and removing the Read Only attribute seems to have solved the problem! Thank you.
