Replaced an IBM mini tower with new machine for having issues. Slaved its hdd in the new machine to pull customer files over. There is one folder, and it has the most info in it, all excel and word files and we can't get to it, copy it or anything. What can I do to override what is denying me access to this. We have set up the same user names with administrative privelages and still no go.

Thanks bcastner, coworker used the ultimate boot cd and was able to manipulate the folder using its utilities. I did print that article out to experiment with in case this happens again.

It will always happy when you move a drive used under a previous version of XP to a new machine. The SID created at installation is different between the old and new machine, and hence the security descriptors for ownership and permissions for any drive, folder or file are different and access is denied.

This is trivial to repair in XP using standard GUI tools, as the article linked above described. Don't be so quick to use UBCD utilities to repair issues that the native utilities are well suited to handle.

Thanks again Bill...

In the future everything will work...

Something even more straightforward is to boot the box with Knoppix, mount the two drives, and copy over what you want. Because you are bypassing XP altogether, you should not have to deal with any of the windows-created restrictions.
