How do you insert a cross-reference to a figure or table? I have created separate series to autonumber my figures and tables. I would like to mark a figure, for example, and insert a cross reference in the paragraph above to say "This is illustrated in <cross reference>." I would like FM to pick up just the series label and number (i.e., Figure n+) so that if I insert a new figure into my text, the cross-references update automatically with the figure numbers.

This is done so easily in Word, and I imagine that it's supported by FM, but the help uses index terms with which I am as yet unfamiliar.

Just create a cross reference that uses <$paranum>

Keep in mind that paranum will pick up everything in your paragraph tag's Autonumber area. Therefore if you have Figure <n+>, or Table <n+> in the Autonumber portion of the paragraph tag, the cross reference will pick up the word and the number.

as a rule of thumb, the identifier and its number are <$paranum>, the name of the item is <$paratext>

For example,

Figure 1: A view of Earth

a cross reference to the paranum of the above tag will yield Figure 1

a cross reference to the paratext of the above tag will yield A view of the Earth

And to add to David's reply...

<$paranum> picks up EVERYTHING in the autonumber setting in your paragraph, so if your numbering looks like this:

f:Figure\ <n+>:

Your cross-reference will yeild:

Figure 1:

If you don't want the colon, you can either use a regular expression in your cross-reference to stripe it out (overkill, if you ask me), or you can define your cross-reference format as follows:

Figure <$paranumonly>

to get:

Figure 1

<$paranumonly> does as it implies - retrieves only the number.

And of course you can combine building blocks to get other cross-reference combos:

<$paranum> <$paratext> on page <$pagenum>

to get:

Figure 1: Widget Configuration Utility on page 4
