Field Length

Is there a fixed legth for fields used in a MySQL database and if there isn't, how do you alter them? I am currently using MySQL Control Center to administer the databases and it tells me that the fields are fixed in length to 255 characters.

Any help greatly appreciated.

You are probably using varchar if the Control Center tells you that. varchar is indeed limited to 255 characters. Here is a list:
